I have a mortise lock on my front door and the key stopped working last week. I’ve replaced several cylindrical doorknobs and locks with no difficulty over the years, but a mortise lock is a bit more complicated for a layperson like me.

I took some photos of the lock with my iPhone and stopped by the Edward Mangione shop in the Hannaford Plaza in Albany. One of the employees, Randy, provided expert advice.

He explained that the mortise cylinder, which contains the lock into which the key is inserted, had simply worn out. He then patiently provided me with detailed steps on how to remove the cylinder.

After going back home and removing the mortise cylinder, I brought it back to the shop and Randy identified it as a Marks brand lock and quickly provided me with a new replacement for a reasonable price. I had no trouble installing the new cylinder and the new lock works perfectly.

I am very grateful for Randy’s patience and knowledge in helping me replace this lock at an affordable price. I would come back to this shop in a heartbeat if I need help with any other lock repairs in the future. Thanks, Randy! 😀

Had to copy a key to my house after work on a Monday...it was 4:13 and I debated calling - especially after reading some of these reviews and reviews for many other locksmiths in the area - but my sister recommended this place so I had to give it a chance. Randy picked up the phone and was polite and gave me the green light to come in and see if my key could be copied, even though they were closing soon. They can copy keys within minutes...it was seriously so fast, and Randy was very attentive to details and I was surprised by how affordable it was. I would never try to copy any key again at a little kiosk in Walmart or Home Depot (they all said they couldn't copy my key for supply or other issues). I would come here again and would recommend anyone to go here at least to copy keys.

Pros: They were well stocked and had a great selection of door locks and hardware

Cons: The sales people either weren't very knowledgeable, didn't have the right equipment, or were misleading. They told me that it was not possible to replace the post on the back of the lock cylinder and that I had to buy a new lock. I went to another locksmith in Albany and they were able to replace the post for 1/10 of what it would have cost to replace the lock through Edward Mangione's.
